The risk of wildfire has the potential to cause so much damage across our landscapes and to our homes. As wildfires become an increasingly common threat across the UK, the Woodland Trust has launched an exciting new volunteer opportunity for young people aged 14–25 to help raise awareness of this growing environmental challenge.

Often triggered by human activity, wildfires in the UK can have devastating consequences for wildlife, habitats, infrastructure and people. And thanks to climate change, the risk is increasing. You’ll receive all the material on wildfires, as well as coaching in how to deliver engaging public talks. All you need is the desire to make a difference!

Recent years have seen some of the most significant wildfire seasons on record, with extreme heat and dry conditions leading to major incidents across the UK. Sadly, many wildfires are caused by human activity, making education and awareness vital in reducing their impact on wildlife, woodland habitats and local communities. It feels particularly topical given the wildfire news both in the UK and the rest of Europe this Summer. As of today this fire season alone the UK has already had 72 wildfires with a massive 23,400 hectares burnt (This data only takes into account fires of 30ha or larger).

Working with the England & Wales Wildfire Forum, we are determined - with your help - to be a voice for education and prevention of wildfires to project our wildlife and landscapes.

In conjunction with the England and Wales Wildfire Forum and Northumberland Fire and Rescue we have created a role that will give young people the opportunity to:

• Learn about the causes and consequences of wildfires in the UK.
• Understand the impact of wildfires on wildlife, nature and people.
• Develop valuable communication, presentation and facilitation skills.
• Take positive action within their communities and schools, colleges and organisations they are involved in by sharing important safety messages.

As a volunteer, you will receive training and support before delivering engaging wildfire awareness activities with groups and in their communities to help spread the word. By partnering together, we can build on what you are already doing and empower young people to become advocates for nature and communities, helping to protect our woodlands and green spaces while developing valuable skills and experience.
